| | | 1. Valente Building Marker | | | Inscription. Built about 1891 of local lava rock by James Valente, custom bootmaker & dealer in hats. His boots brought the then high cost of $10.00 & wore well for years. After his demise, his widow Kate, continued sales with aid of their son, Leo, who repaired boots. 3 sons and a daughter survived them. The family home, once next door, was one of the oldest houses in town. Location. 38° 8.242′ N, 120° 27.548′ W. Marker is in Murphys, California, in Calaveras County. | | | 4. Murphys Motorcycle Company Storefront | | The astute observer will notice two things in this photo. One is the small green frogs on motorcycles - representations of frogs are frequently seen at storefronts in Calaveras County, inasmuch as Mark Twain's 1865 short story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is one of the county's chief claims to fame. The other thing to notice is that the woman standing in front of the store is a mannequin. | | |
