1. Indian Gantlet and Race Course Marker

Inscription. From the present State Street to the railroad bridge was a famous Indian race track and gantlet run by captives. James Whittaker ran it so well that he was adopted and given land by the Indians.

Erected 1930 by Ohio Revolutionary Memorial Commission. (Marker Number C43.)

Location. 41° 20.863′ N, 83° 6.801′ W. Marker is in Fremont, Ohio, in Sandusky County. Marker is on North Front Street north of West State Street, on the right when traveling north. Click for map. This historical marker is located in downtown Fremont, just north of the State Street Bridge, which crosses the Sandusky River, on the west side of the River. 2. Indian Gantlet and Race Course Marker

More about this marker. This historical marker was part of the Ohio Revolutionary Memorial Trail series which was put in place in 1930 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Ohio's Revolutionary War era Battle of Piqua, by the Ohio Revolutionary Memorial Commission. Back when this historical marker was first erected, in 1930, Front Street was then part of State Route 53 and State Street was then part of US 20.
