1. New Cumberland Marker

Inscription. Near New Cumberland, George Chapman settled, about 1783, and built an Indian fort. Here are graves of the Chapmans, Gregorys, Graftons, and other pioneer families. Pughtown, settled about 1810, was the first county seat.

Erected 1975 by West Virginia Department of Archives and History.

Location. 40° 29.579′ N, 80° 36.209′ W. Marker is in New Cumberland, West Virginia, in Hancock County. Marker is on Ridge Avenue (West Virginia Route 2) south of Lincoln Street, on the right when traveling south. Click for map.
