1. Shingletown Store Marker

Inscription. Freeland's store was built by John and Jane Freeland in 1854. Jane was registered as a sole trader in 1861, in Sierra Township (Shingletown) in the businesses of stockraising, farming and hotel-keeping, with their sons Bradford and William. The store was sold to John McCarley and Al "The Banker" Smith. In 1871, McCarley & Smith built the first hotel of account and later bought the dry sawmill. The store sold everything from harness, tools, rigging, clothing, feed and grain, to steam tractors, until they sold in 1910. The building also housed a cafe, bar, and at times the post office, established June 24, 1874, McCarley as postmaster. The original building was torn down in 1966.

Also see . . .  Shingletown got its name from shingle-making camps.... Redding.com's article (3/12/2010) on the history of Shingletown. On the Shingletown Store, "....The first Shingletown Store was built by John Freeland in 1854. In 1871, Freeland sold to John McCarley, who made improvements and took in Albert Smith as a partner and established the McCarley and Smith General Merchandise, Trading Post and Hotel. Their business became a very popular place. Its principal product was shakes; other products included dry goods, groceries, boots, shoes, clothing, wines, liquors and cigars. A saloon occupied the back half of the store and the post office was, believe it or not, situated in a small alcove of the saloon. This store was a short distance from today's Shingletown Store. It was demolished in 1966." (Submitted on October 21, 2011.)
