He was the First Recipient
of
The Gonzales Award for Distinguished Journalism
"He wrote knowingly about
South Carolina, it's people,
places, issues, and its life's
blood...He worked with clean hands
and honest heart...Dedication...
Fairness...Intent on Good."

He believed and practiced a strong
philosophy of life: "This above all: to thine own self
be true, And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man," and "No man
is an island...And therefore never send to know
for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee..."

3. Blakely Sloan Home
In 1894, Dr. D.E. Tribble built this house, a one-story frame house on Musgrove Street. It was later owned by one of his business partners, Blakely Sloan. This house is marked today as the 1922 birthplace of Eugene Blakely Sloan II.
