1. Meridian Marker
 
Inscription.

Formerly Sowashee, it was
chartered 1860, and throve
as rail junction during the
Civil War, serving in 1863
as temporary capital and as
depository of the state's
official records.

 
Erected 1949 by Mississippi Historical Commission.
 
Location. 32° 21.87′ N, 88° 41.746′ W. Marker is in Meridian, Mississippi, in Lauderdale County. Marker is on Front Street near 18th Avenue, on the right when traveling east. Click for map. Located at Meridian Union Station. Marker is in this post office area: Meridian MS 39301, United States of America.
