Erected 1928 by DeKalb County Historical Society.
Location. 41° 16.984′ N, 84° 55.317′ W. Marker is in Spencerville, Indiana, in DeKalb County. 1. First Family in the First Settlement was David and Elizabeth Yates Butler
Kern Butler is the third Grandchild of David and Elizabeth Yates Butler who were living at this location when they obtained their land deed. They moved here from Pick-a-Way County Ohio with Thomas Lovell Yates who was a brother of Elizabeth and not married. By the end of the year there were 6 more families who had obtained land deeds on the properties on which they were living. This settlement was first known as DeKelb but when this name become the County's name, the new name become Spencerville.| | | |
