La Villita in San Antonio in Bexar County, Texas — The American South (West South Central)
Hessler House
(The Guadalupe House)
Both this and the adjacent house reflect building styles of the post—Civil War War era in San Antonio, when simple, well-proportioned houses began to replace earlier adobe structures and the rude houses typical of a frontier settlement. The houses have different floor plans, although they both have three-bay front porches.
A shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe was built as a part of the NYA era wall on the north side of the house. Shrines built to venerate a cherished saint were common features of Hispanic homes. The house and walkway leading to it take their present names from the shrine.
Erected by La Villita Tenants Association and the San Antonio Conservation Society. (Marker Number Q.)
