Built in 1888-1889 and dedicated March 30, 1889, This is the first library building in the United States funded by American Industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who intended it to be a "center of light and learning." The library played a seminal role in the evolution of Carnegie's vision of himself as a public benefactor of the working class.
