Dedicated To The Memory Of The Heroic Men Of Bridgeport, Who Fell In The Late War For The Preservation Of The Union. July, 1876

"It is for us the living to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, that from these honored dead we take increased devotion in that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth."

More about this marker. The monument stands on the 1862 camp and training grounds of the 17th Regiment of the Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.
The central arched open space, now empty, once housed a white marble female representation of Liberty. It was removed because of deterioration of the stone.
The plaques are replacements for the originals, which were removed when the Connecticut Historical Society examined the monument as part of its survey of the state’s Civil War Monuments. The plaques are cast aluminum. Many of the decorative elements on the lower sections of the monuments base are fiberglass replacements.
