1. Farmer's Telephone Company Marker
Inscription. Built in the early 1900’s and known at that time as the “Nevada Consolidated Telephone and Telegraph Company,” only five telephone lines were originally installed in Gardnerville. “Long Distance Connections Available” was printed in the Gardnerville section of the Douglas County Business Directory.

During World War I, the federal government took over and began regulating telephone service with a rate increase.

After World War I the United Farmers Group successfully petitioned Washington, D.C. to re-establish pre-war rates, becoming the first Independent Telephone Company in the United States to return to the earlier rate structure.

Erected by U.S. Forest Service, Department of Agriculture.
