1. Maury’s School Marker
Inscription. Just north was a classical school conducted by the Rev. James Maury, rector of Fredericksville Parish from 1754 to 1769. Thomas Jefferson was one of Maury’s students. Matthew Fontaine Maury, the “Pathfinder of the Seas,” was Maury’s grandson.

2. Maury’s School Marker
Reverend James Maury taught instruction in classics, manners and morals, mathematics, literature, history and geography, Latin and Greek. Most of these boys when going to the Reverend Maury’s school, lived there as home was too far away to leave the school area and be back the next morning.” (Submitted on March 29, 2009.)

3. Approximate Site of Maury’s School
Located on the grounds of the modern Edgeworth estate. The Historic Homes of the South-west Mountains Virginia (1898) indicated "The old log school-house in which he taught stood in one corner of the Edgeworth yard, the site of which is now marked by a hedge of cedars."
