1. Tubac Schools Marker
Inscription. In 1789, Toribio Otero received the first land grant in this area in exchange for teaching school at his ranch. A school district was established in 1876 and in 1885 T. Lillie Mercer built this school, one of the earliest in Arizona. It was in use until 1965 and is now a part of Tubac Presidio State Park.
 
Erected by Tubac Historical Society and the Arizona Historical Society.
 
Location. 31° 36.741′ N, 111° 2.806′ W. Marker is in Tubac, Arizona, in Santa Cruz County. Marker is on Calle Iglesia, on the right when traveling east. Click for map. Marker is inside the wall of Tubac Presidio State Historic Park but, can be viewed from Calle Iglesia. Marker is in this post office area: Tubac AZ 85646, United States of America.
