Inscription. Georgetown Steel Corporation converts iron ore imported from South America and Canada in to premium-grade steel wire rod that ultimately is used in the manufacturing of radial tires, pre-stressed concrete strand and dozens of commercial and industrial applications. About 800,000 tons of raw iron ore are delivered to GSC through the Port of Georgetown every year. The ore is refined and processed at the mill's Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant - the only such on-site facility in operation in the U.S. Mixed with scrap metal, the DRI pellets are melted at temperatures exceeding 3,000 degrees in the mill's two electric arc furnaces and molded into 56-foot-long steel billets weighing two tons each. After being cooled the billets are reheated and rolled into precision-gauge wire rod at speeds of up to 150 MPH. The finished product - steel wire rod coils - are transported to manufacturing customers throughout the Southeast. With more than 700 employees, the mill operates around the clock, seven days a week. Georgetown Steel Corporation was one of the first steel mills in the nation to be awarded certification for its quality standards (ISO 9002) from the acclaimed International Standards Organization.
