During the Union occupation of Chattanooga preceding the battle, the 18th was attached to the Brigade of Engineers, and was actively engaged in building boats, warehouses, and hospitals.
It had prominent part in the preparation for seizing Brown's Ferry, and a large detachment of the regiment accompanied the boat expedition.
 
Erected 1908 by State of Ohio. (Marker Number MT-271.)
 
Location. 35° 1.694′ N, 85° 15.479′ W. Marker is in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in Hamilton County. Marker is on South Crest Road 0.1 miles south of Ridge Road, on the right when traveling south. Click for map. This marker (tablet) is located on Missionary Ridge, along South Crest Road, in the Ohio Reservation. This particular marker (tablet) is in the row of tablets that line the right (north) side property line of the Ohio Reservation. According to the location information provided by the National Park Service, “Missionary Ridge - Ohio Reservation/1934 Map 124-14”. Marker is in this post office area: Chattanooga TN 37404, United States of America.
