Inscription.
Founded in 1876 on lands formerly held by the Cherokee Indian Nation. Pittsburg became an early center for railroads, lead and zinc smelting, coal mining, clay tile and mining machinery manufacturing. The Kansas State Teachers College was established here in 1903.
