1. Sylvan Lake Marker
Inscription. Created 1837-1838 as reservoir for proposed canal link between Fort Wayne and Lake Michigan. Part of 1836 internal improvements program. Popular resort area; site of Chautauqua, 1878-1906. Provided hydraulic power. Earthen dam on Elkhart River impounds 630 acres of water.
 
Erected 1992 by Indiana Historical Bureau and Rome City Chautauqua Committee. (Marker Number 57.1992.1.)

Location. 41° 29.95′ N, 85° 22.55′ W. Marker is in Rome City, Indiana, in Noble County. Marker is on State Road 9 half a mile north of Front Street, on the right when traveling south. Click for map.
