1. Hays House Marker
Inscription.
Built in 1857 by Seth Hays on the site of the first permanent building (1848) in Council Grove. The original log cabin was also known as the Hays House. Used continuously as a restaurant, this building was also used for church services, court proceedings and the printing of the first newspaper in town.
 
Erected by G. F. W. C. Philomathian Club.
 
Marker series. This marker is included in the Santa Fe Trail marker series.
 
Location. 38° 39.687′ N, 96° 29.386′ W. Marker is in Council Grove, Kansas, in Morris County. Marker is on Main Street (U.S. 56) near Wood Street, on the right when traveling west. Click for map.
