2. One Account of Brown's Death - Taylor County in the Civil War. Several different versions of the events surrounding Brown's death exist. The one cited here involves Brown returning from a recruiting event and being confronted by Confederate pickets. A pistol fight ensued, somewhat akin to a classic old Western movie gunfight. 3. Another Account of Brown's Death. From the West Virginia Historical Society, this article offers a different version. Brown was part of a patrol or reconnaissance to determine the strength of Confederate forces on the other side of the river. Brown fired upon Confederate pickets and was in turn shot by them.
