The XIII Winter Olympic Games
were opened by
Vice President of the United States Walter F. Mondale and here the sacred Olympic Flame was brought from Olympia, Greece to shed its light for twelve days on the Quadrennial renewal of the ancient Olympic spirit of excellence, brotherhood and peace

This tower was erected to hold that flame and stands as an everlasting monument to the 1282 Olympians from 37 nations who took part in these Olympic Games
 
Location. 44° 15.775′ N, 73° 57.88′ W. Marker is near Lake Placid, New York, in Essex County. Marker can be reached from Cascade Road (New York State Route 73), on the right when traveling north. Click for map. This carved stone marker is on the back side of the base of the Olympic Torch, facing away from the roadway . Marker is in this post office area: Lake Placid NY 12946, United States of America.

This slightly smaller metal plaque is mounted to the base of the Olympic Flame cauldron tower to the right of center stating the Site "is gratefully dedicated in the memory of The Rev. J. Bernard Fell, President of the Lake Placid 1980 Olympic Winter Games Organizing Committee."
