1. The Barton Street Potter's Field Marker
Inscription. This marker commemorates the indigent and unknown once interred on this site. Provided by the City in 1816 and once called the Colored Cemetery, it was the final resting place for former slaves and free blacks. Long barren and unused, in 1920 this site became the location of the City's new high school after the recovered remains were reinterred in other cemeteries.
 
Erected 2011 by Maury Commons Condominium Association.
 
Location. 38° 18.053′ N, 77° 27.868′ W. Marker is in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Marker is on Barton Street just south of Day Street, on the left when traveling south. Click for map. Mounted on the SE corner of the the Maury Commons Condominiums, formerly Maury High School. Marker is in this post office area: Fredericksburg VA 22401, United States of America.
