1. Simon Green Atkins House Marker
With a charming mockingbird gracing the frame.
Inscription. The Atkins House was built by Simon Green Atkins in 1893. Atkins was responsible for the development of the Columbian Heights neighborhood and for the creation of Slater Industrial Academy, later Winston-Salem University. Dr. Atkins came to Winston-Salem in 1890 to serve as the principal of the Depot Street Graded School, then the largest and most important public school for African-Americans in North Carolina. Atkins was president of Slater Industrial Academy from 1892-1934. The Atkins House has been relocated from the Columbian Heights neighborhood, which stood to the west. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
 
Erected 2003 by Winston-Salem Historic Marker Program.
 
Location. 36° 5.479′ N, 80° 13.484′ W. Marker is in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in Forsyth County. Marker is at the intersection of Price Street and Wallace Street, on the left when traveling south on Price Street. Click for map. Located on the campus of Winston-Salem State University, just off Cromartie Street. Marker is in this post office area: Winston Salem NC 27101, United States of America.
