1. Historic Wisconsin Avenue Commercial District Marker
Inscription. Begun by flour millers to capture the trade of local wheat farmers, this central shopping district was established near the mills at the heart of the city. Built by the emerging merchant class during the paper industry's heyday, many of the buildings date from the 1880s and 1890s.
 
Erected 1999 by Wisconsin Historical Society. (Marker Number 412.)
