Inscription. Born in Scott County, Kentucky, September 11, 1833
Died at his home, Strawberry Hill Farm, near Hannibal December 23, 1896.
Representative First District of Missouri in the Congress of the United States 1879 - 1895

The impress of his public service may be found in the legislation of his country; that of his private life, in the hearts of all with whom it came in touch.
A memorial from his fellow citizens.

This landmark legislation authorized agricultural experiment stations in each state associated with the land grant university.
Place here September 18, 1987 by The Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Missouri and the Missouri State Historical Society.
