| | | 1. Sloat's Landing Marker | | | Inscription. On this spot on July 7, 1846, U.S. Marines and Sailors landed and raised the American flag over the Custom House which stands before you. Mexico and the United States were at war. American forces landing in Monterey claimed 600,000 square miles for the United States. Location. 36° 36.215′ N, 121° 53.608′ W. Marker is in Monterey, California, in Monterey County. Marker can be reached from Olivier Street. Click for map. This marker is set in the pavers of a normally closed (plaza) portion of Oliver street between the Custom House and Fisherman's Wharf.
