Former Site Of Battelle
Thriving iron ore and coal mining community of early 1900ís established by Colonel John Gordon Battelle five miles north of Valley Head.

 
Erected 1973 by Alabama Historical Association.
 
Location. 34° 34.22′ N, 85° 36.937′ W. Marker is in Valley Head, Alabama, in DeKalb County. Marker is at the intersection of Winston Street and Sulphur Springs Road, on the right when traveling north on Winston Street. Click for map. 3. Site Of Battelle
The site of Battelle is fairly inaccessible by car. This photo was taken from a train while on an excursion to Chattanooga. Even thin there was nothing left of the early industrial community.
