Chartered in 1940 as the Virginia Fisheries Laboratory, the organization was originally located in Yorktown. Construction of the Coleman Bridge, which opened to traffic in 1952, caused the relocation of VIMS to Gloucester Point. Its current campus includes more than 40 acres. The School of Marine Science at VIMS is a graduate school of the College of William and Mary.
