and Military Engineer
of the American Revolution. Kosciuszko built all of the principal American fortifications of the Revolution, including West Point, too strong for the British to attack, and planned many of the successful battles, including Saratoga, America’s First major victory.
In his modesty he declined promotion to general; In his generosity he refused pay for himself as long as his troops went unpaid; In his humanity he left his American estate to buy freedom for slaves and provide them with land and education.
