Inscription. In 1852, Frederick Ruehle, the second owner of this property built a two-story brick structure with iron shutters on this site. When Alois Wetzel became the new owner in 1866, he put in a shaving saloon (sic) and bathhouse downstairs while the Yreka Journal printing office occupied the upper floor. At one time the United States Post Office operated at this location and installed new “keyless” lock boxes. Later, space was rented for the Yreka Union newspaper, a law practice, dentist offices, and a drapery shop. The building’s front has been altered significantly, but since it did not burn in the fire of 1871, the building has been home to continuous business ventures for over 145 years.

Erected by City of Yreka.
