Inscription. The jail was designed by Oshkosh, Wisconsin architect William Waters and built in 1876. The building served a dual purpose of being both the sheriff's home and also the county lock-up. It was in use continuously until 1969. That year a county referendum saved the building from demolition. The Kewaunee County Historical Society was allowed to convert the building into a museum. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The present courthouse was built encompassing the original structure, dating to 1873. The photo shows how the jail and courthouse looked around 1910.
