Inscription. Scientists consider William Clark’s dig at Big Bone Lick in 1807 as establishing American vertebrate paleontology. Bones found here by Clark included mastodon and mammoth. Prehistoric native American artifacts found were given to Dr. Wm. Goforth in Cincinnati.

Location. 38° 53.341′ N, 84° 44.856′ W. Marker is near Union, Kentucky, in Boone County. Marker is on Beaver Road west of Route 127, on the right when traveling west. Click for map. entrance to Big Bone State Park is about two miles west of US 127 on St Rt 338 marker is located in the parking lot of the Museum, second driveway to right, off main park road (first driveway to right leads to the picnic area, where there are two more related markers). Marker is at or near this postal address: 3325 Beaver Rd, Union KY 41091, United States of America.
