the 1862 Jackson fire started. Ere that, Francis and Paul Reichling moved in to buy and assay gold. Earlier, the site housed rivals of Wells, Fargo & Co.; Hunter & Co., Adams & Co. and Pacific Express. One-story bricks arose here and next door. Both stores acquired second floors early in the 20th century.
