1. Grant's Canal Marker
Inscription. In early 1863 Federal General U.S. Grant dug a canal here connecting the Mississippi River and Lake Providence. This attempt to use bayous and rivers to bypass Vicksburg failed.
 
Erected 1961 by the Department of Commerce and Industry.
 
Location. 32° 48.408′ N, 91° 10.469′ W. Marker is in Lake Providence, Louisiana, in East Carroll Parish. Marker is at the intersection of U.S. 65 and Ingram Street, on the right when traveling north on U.S. 65. Click for map.
