Inscription.
Here lie buried officers and men of the
Third Continental Light Dragoons
They were surprised while asleep in Old Tappan
today’s River Vale, N.J.
Taken prisoner by British forces.
They died here in Tappan on and about
September 28, 1778

The Third Continental Light Dragoons marker is located next to this church. It was used as a hospital and a prison during the Revolutionary War. The trials of Maj. John Andre as a spy, and of Joshua Heit Smith for treason were held here in 1780.
