| | | 1. Stinesville Limestone Industry Marker | | | Inscription. In 1827, Richard Gilbert opened a commercial limestone quarry three quarters of a mile south on Jack’s Defeat Creek. Stinesville’s oolitic limestone, desirable as building stone, was used in several Indiana courthouses and Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, Indianapolis. Limestone industry has been major economic factor in area. Erected 1996 by Erected 1996 Indiana Historical Bureau and Danny Phelix Jacobs. (Marker Number 53.1996.1.) Location. 39° 17.931′ N, 86° 39.126′ W. Marker is in Stinesville, Indiana, in Monroe County. Marker is on West Main Street near West Railroad Street. Click for map.
