| Texas (Gonzales County), Gonzales — 3823 — Andrew Ponton — Texas Heroes Square | | | Born in Virginia to William and Isabella (Mooreland) Ponton, Andrew Ponton came to Texas in December 1829 and settled in Green DeWitt's Colony, receiving a land grant near Hallettsville. He became active in area politics, and in 1834 he was named alcalde, or mayor, of the municipality of Gonzales. The following year, after the community began to experience political unrest as a result of differences with the Mexican government, the community formed a Committee of Safety and appointed . . . — Map (db m36591) HM | | Texas (Gonzales County), Waelder — The Town of Waelder | | | In 1875 an 1876, when the Galveston Harrisburg & San Antonio Railroad built through Gonzales County, this town was laid out to serve as a shipping point for the surrounding agricultural and ranching area. Hopkinsville, a thriving community five miles north, moved here to become the nucleus of Waelder.
Because of valuable services rendered to railroad interests in the early days, the GH&SA named the new town for the company attorney, Frederick Jacob Waelder (1820-1887).
