Horace Africanus Beale Horton. . , To mark the 160th Anniversary of the Historic Breakthrough of , Horace Africanus Beale Horton , Son of a liberated slave, the first black medical graduate from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, 1858, Doctor, soldier, writer, entrepreneur, visionary who challenged prevailing European views on the inferiority of Africans, His distinguished service to humanity in the countries of the sub-region included twenty years as surgeon in the British West African army, His research on tropical diseases included descriptions of a then-unknown condition later identified as sickle cell anemia, ... published books .. output ...his contemporaries in British West Africa, Unveiled on December 6, 2018 by Her Worship Yvonne Aki-Sawyer .... Elected by popular votes March 7, 2018 , In the presence of (1) Lieutenant General Brima Sesay ∙ Chief of Defence Staff SLRAF , (2) Commander Paul Carnell ∙ Defence Adviser British High Commission Sierra Leone, This monument also honours Horton’s contemporaries and the subsequent generations in the medical field who gave selfless service in Sierra Leone and the sub-region of West Africa, they were all the offprings of freed slaves, Who founded Freetown; who following in the foot-prints of the trail-blazer rose to the heights of medical excellence.
