1. St. Robert Southwell Marker
Inscription. Born in England, Robert entered the Society of Jesus in 1578 and was ordained in Rome in 1585, where he briefly served as Prefect of Studies at the English College. Robert was nearly arrested on his return to England, but eluded capture and spent six years traveling from house to house and providing Catholics with the Eucharist. Betrayed in 1592, Robert refused to give any information about other priests or Catholics, even after three years of interrogation and torture. After exasperating his jailers with his refusal to provide them with information about Catholics in England, Robert was hanged. His feast day is February 21.
