1. Claudette Colvin Home Marker
Inscription.
Claudette Colvin Home. Montgomery County. This home was constructed in 1940 for Mary Anne and Q.P. Colvin. Their daughter Claudette Colvin refused on March 2, 1955, to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery city bus. This event occurred nine months before the incident in which Rosa Parks did the same, sparking the Montgomery bus boycott. Colvin was also one of five plaintiffs in the federal court case, Browder v. Gayle, that legally challenged bus segregation in the city. On November 13, 1956, the Supreme Court ordered Montgomery and the state of Alabama to end bus segregation. Colvin relocated to New York City in 1958. For many years Colvin was one of the unsung foot soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement. ,
