1. The Steamer Sultana Marker
Inscription. On April 24, 1865, the Sultana left Vicksburg with over 2,300 Union soldiers aboard, many of whom were former prisoners of war. Some 200 civilians were also on board, despite a legal limit of 376 people. Due to a faulty boiler, the Sultana exploded north of Memphis, killing at least 1,800, the greatest maritime disaster in U.S. history.
 
Erected 2001 by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

Location. 32° 21.045′ N, 90° 53.027′ W. Marker is in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in Warren County. Marker is on Levee Street north of Clay Street, on the right when traveling north. Touch for map. Located in the Catfish Row Art Park, next to the Mississippi levee. Marker is at or near this postal address: 1200 Levee Street, Vicksburg MS 39183, United States of America.

2. The Steamer Sultana
Sultana at Helena, Arkansas, on April 26, 1865, a day before her destruction. A crowd of paroled prisoners covers her decks.
