Inscription. First proposed in December of 1945, the F-89 Scorpion was designed as a replacement for the P-61 Black Widow. The first flight was on August 16, 1948. A novel design of the aircraft was the use of “decelerons,” split ailerons that could be opened to act as speed breaks. A total of 1,050 of these two-seat, all-weather interceptors were built.
Manufactured by Northrop Aircraft at Hawthorn, California, this aircraft was delivered to the USAF on January 5, 1955 and served until after July of 1962. It was assigned to Goose Bay Air Base, Labrador and was later returned to Northrop for contract work an upgrade to F-89J standards. The makings are those of the 59th FIS at Goose Bay Air Base, Labrador.
