1. The Oval Garden and Willow Pond Marker
Inscription.
Knox’s letters and financial papers specifically note the presence of an oval-shaped garden, a key feature to the landscape plan. The garden will contain plants such as rosebushes, lilacs and bleeding hearts, and will have brick walkways, an arbor, boxwood beds and provide a beautiful public space for visitors to enjoy.

"The General has a garden fence ovally. Indeed, circles and semi-circles in his fences, etc. seem to be all the mode here.”
- Journal of the Reverend Paul Coffin, 15 August 1796

A focal point of the hiking and biking trails that wind through the property, the Willow Pond will be located behind the Oval garden. Willow trees will outline the pond just as they did at the original Montpelier, providing a quiet place for reflection.

… part of it should be planted a pretty thicket of willows – under them and on the bank and edges of the pond your wood ducks would do well, if any could be got for you."
- Joseph Pierce to Knox,
28 December 1794
