52nd Ohio, - Major James T. Holmes.
2nd Illinois Light Artillery, Battery I, - Captain Charles M. Barnett.
The Brigade moved about 1 p.m. from the vicinity of McAfee's Church, two and one-half miles northeast of this point and while marching along the road east of this position, the head of the column was fired upon by artillery of Forrest's cavalry east of the road. To avoid delay McCook changed direction to the right to go around some open fields commanded by Forrest's artillery. Passing around these, under artillery fire, the Brigade formed on the crest of the ridge in rear of this position to cover the open fields and Chattanooga Road to the position held by General Thomas. The position was tenaciously held under a bitter artillery fire, thus preventing the enemy from reaching General Thomas' rear on this flank, and also kept open the line of retreat by the Rossville Road. Soon after dark the Brigade withdrew to Rossville.
