Inscription. Before the coming of the railroad, the Mississippi River was the commercial lifeline of Cape Girardeau. The arrival of the packet boats, loaded with goods for local and regional residents, was an exciting event in the community. To the left of the gang plank is the prominent merchant, George Thilenius, observing the crew of roustabouts as they unload the ship's cargo.
