1. Republican France Marker

Inscription. When Napoleon I became Emperor of France in 1799, he envisioned the establishment of a vast "French Empire in America". He began in 1800 when he won control of Louisiana from Spain.

Constant threat of war with England soon forced him to abandon his plans. In late 1803, negotiations were consummated between France and the United States which culminated in the Louisiana Purchase. Thus ended the long struggle by European powers to dominate the Mississippi Valley.

Regarding Republican France. In 1800, Spain retroceded Louisiana to Napoleon, but the French did not reoccupy the colony. Thus, in 1804, after the Louisiana Purchase of the previous year, Spanish troops transferred the Post to the United States.

After seizing political power in France in a 1799 coup d'état Napoleon became First Consul, he crowned himself emperor in 1804.
