Regarding Ohio. During early 1863, the 48th Regiment participated in the Union's advance on Vicksburg. The 48th fought in the Battles of Magnolia Hills, Champion Hill, and, on May 23, 1863, in an assault on Confederate forces in the rear of Vicksburg. On June 25, the regiment launched another assault on a portion of the Southern lines. While the 48th did not drive the Confederates from their positions, the assault placed the regiment in the very front of the Union lines.
