1. The Macfarlane House Marker

Inscription.
James Macfarlane built his 1854 Greek Revival home on land given to him by his father-in-law Edward Overton, lawyer, landowner, and successful local businessman.

Macfarlane, lawyer and trained engineer, managed the Barclay Mines. In 1873 he wrote a book "The Coal Regions of America." In 1876 he published "An American Geological Railway Guide." Because the home was built late in the Greek Revival period it illustrates many influences of the subsequent Italianate style, particularly wide eaves and bracketing. In this home the Macfarlanes reared their three sons and three daughters. The eldest son Edward became superintendent of the Long Valley Coal Company and another son James, president judge of Allegheny County.
