1. Cane Grinder Marker

Inscription.
Stalks of hand-cut sugar cane were transported from the field to the mill in large two-wheeled cane carts drawn by mules or oxen. The stalks were then fed through the mill's grinder. As the mule or ox walked the grinder's arm around, the rollers pulled the stalks through. Following this operation the trash stalks, known as bagasse, were hauled away. After crushing the cane juice passed in to one or more wooden vats where the liquid was cleared of any trash or debris. Finally the juice was carried to the mill house for processing.
