1. Patrick, John Tyrant. After carefully considering several sites and in consultation with the newly enlarged Seaboard Air-Line Railway, Patrick used his own resources in March 1884 to purchase 675 acres in Moore County. He organized the New England Manufacturing, Mining, and Estate Company and laid out a town first called Vineland but soon renamed Southern Pines. Securing the recommendation of physicians in New England and the Middle Atlantic states, he issued brochures and other material to attract newcomers. 3. Pinebluff Town History. (Link includes photo of John Tyrant Patrick) The town of Pinebluff was established as part of the late-19th century effort to populate the Sandhills Region of the state and thereby bring in some needed economic stimulus. In the aftermath of the War Between The States, the Sandhills Region had been heavily timbered, with most of the longleaf pines either cut for lumber or boxed for turpentine. Seeking to attract new residents, John Tyrant Patrick, the State Commissioner of Immigration, helped to found and lay out the town of Southern Pines.
