Ahuehuete del Río Querétaro
En este lugar donde convergen el agua y los caminos donde la fecunda tierra queretana ha unido a las culturas se yergue estoico, el árbol más antiguo de la ciudad de Santiago de Querétaro. Un incansable ahuehuete (Taxodium huegeliies (sic, huegelii)) de más de 170 años que ha sido un testigo fiel del gran auge económico y el desenvolvimiento urbano de nuestra ciudad.

En náhuatl ahuehuete significa "el viejo del agua", es una especie originaria de América del Norte, pueden alcanzar hasta 35 metros de altura y llegar a los más de 700 años de antigüedad. Conocido también como ciprés Moctezuma, sabino o ciprés mexicano. Fue nombrado el árbol nacional de México en 1921 cuando se conmemoraron los cien años de la Independencia de México. Su belleza, longevidad y tradición lo hace un digno guardián de nuestra historia.

The Ahuehuete of the Querétaro River
In this place where the water and the roads converge, where the rich land of Querétaro has united cultures, stoicly stands the oldest tree in the city of Santiago de Querétaro. A tireless ahuehuete (Taxodium huegelii), more than 170 years old, has been a faithful witness to the great economic and urban development of our city.

In Náhuatl ahuehuete means "the old man of the water." It is a species native to North America, can reach up to 35 meters in height and can live to be 700 years old. Also known as Moctezuma cypress, sabino or Mexican cypress, it was named the National Tree of Mexico in 1921 when the 100th anniversary of the Independence of Mexico was commemorated. Its beauty, longevity and tradition make it a worthy guardian of our history.

2. The Ahuehuete of the Querétaro River and Marker
of the responsible and timely decisions taken that are related to the infrastructure requirements of the city’s inhabitants. An urban improvement carried out in 2016 by the Government of the State of Querétaro, it takes into account not only basic transportation needs, but also the need for recreational areas, improvement to the urban image, intervention in this section of the river as it passes through the Calesa Neighborhood, as well as the protection of the environment.

We invite the inhabitants and visitors of this city to take care of and protect this urban space, as well as to keep its green areas in good condition, since it is a place for all to enjoy.

4. An earlier Ahuehuete of the Querétaro River Marker
This 1996 marker, now removed, included basically the same information as the current marker. It notes that the ahuehuete tree probably started growing in 1850. It reads:

Este ahuehuete (del náhuatl atl, agua, y huehue, viejo: "el viejo del agua") Taxodium mucronatum Ten, nació alrededor del año 1850. Los ciudadanos de Santiago de Querétaro manifestamos nuestro compromiso con el cuidado del medio ambiente, declarándolo como el árbol nativo más antiguo y único en su género sobreviviendo en el cauce del Río Querétaro.
